Established in 2017, but with a heritage that goes back to 1997, The Food Purveyor currently operates three supermarket brands: Village Grocer, Ben’s Independent Grocer (B.I.G.) and Pasaraya OTK. Each brand provides distinct grocery offerings, appealing to different segments of Malaysia’s customer demographic. As the name suggests, The Food Purveyor aims to be the leading name in offering a wide range of grocery and food products ranging from fresh produce, popular brands, to rare-to-find delicacies. The company takes pride in curating and selecting the best food products sourced from all over the world for its customers to enjoy. Currently, The Food Purveyor manages 30 stores covering Klang Valley and Johor Bahru.

OTK Beginnings

Starting from a humble sundry store in Gombak in the 1950s, the Ong family took the leap in 1997 to open Pasaraya OTK, the first modern-format supermarket to open in Gombak, and later in Sentul and Puchong.

Birth of Village Grocer

2004 marks the entry of the Ong family into the premium supermarket segment with the first Village Grocer opening in Bangsar Village. Once established as a customer favourite the brand extends to Sunway Giza in 2009 and Mont Kiara in 2011.

Navis Capital acquires stake in Village Grocer

Navis Capital joins the Ong family in ownership with a majority stake, providing the platform and capability for Village Grocer to rapidly expand and reach out to a wider audience in Klang Valley.

Village Grocer expands

These 3 years see Village Grocer expanding rapidly. Growing its presence from 3 stores to 12 into prime malls within the Klang Valley area.

B.I.G. joins The Food Purveyor family

Further strengthening our position in the premium grocery segment, Village Grocer acquires Ben’s Independent Grocer after a re-branding exercise to become The Food Purveyor.

First store In Johor

Tapping into new markets and expanding geographically, Village Grocer’s first outlet beyond the Klang Valley opens in Paradigm Mall, Johor Bahru.

Digital Loyalty Program Launched

Bites by The Food Purveyor digital loyalty app is launched and has brought rewards and partnership privileges to the smartphones of more than 250,000 members.

Mission Plastic Free by 2023

The Food Purveyor embark on a mission to rid its stores of all self-induced single-use plastic by the end of 2023. Together with reducing food waste, these become the pillars of its ESG program linked to the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDG2, SDG12 & SDG14).

Introducing Convenience to Grocery Shopping

Responding to trends in online grocery shopping, Bites Shop is launched providing online shoppers options to click-and-collect or have their groceries delivered right to their doorstep.
